A Registered Office address also known as simply Registered Office or legal seat is the official physical location of a business or company registered in the United Kingdom. The address is given by Companies House that serves as the Registrar for incorporated UK businesses.
When is it required?

For companies that intend to run with a structure different from a partnership or sole trade the business needs to be registered or incorporated with Companies House. For all such businesses operating in the UK registration is needed to be done with the relevant Companies House.

Common Businesses needing a registered office:
LLP (Limited Liability Partnership)
PLC (Public Limited Company)
Ltd/Limited (Any private company limited by shares)

For a small business, there is the option of selecting a limited liability partnership or a private limited company. For any business owner not too sure which to opt for it is best to seek the counsel of a professional accountant that will look at the business and advise the best option accordingly.

For any business that is registered in the UK the registered office address needs to be in the same jurisdiction. However, there is no need for the address to be the actual physical location from where business activities are carried out. It just needs to be a premises where all the official correspondence and post arrives from the HMRC and the UK government.

Remember once you have a registered office address, it is available in the public domain and can be seen by anyone looking for your information. This is possible using the Companies House website’s lookup function to find out information about any company. That is one reason for not using your personal address as the registered office. it is advisable to use a commercial premises or service address as a registered office location other than your personal home address.
