The Portugal Birth Certificate is called a Assento de Nascimento which is issued by Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil). Birth certificates are issued to all children born in Portugal; births must be registered within 20 days. Parents are fined if they do not register a birth. Late registration is allowed.
Portugal Death Certificate
The Portugal Death Certificate is called a Assento de Obito which is issued by Civil Registry Office (Conservatoria do Registo Civil). Portugal issue death certificates following the registration of a death, which must happen within 48 hours from the:
time of death
discovery of the body
completion of a post-mortem
decision not to hold a post-mortem
Portugal Marriage Certificate
The Portugal Marriage Certificate is called a Assento de Casamento which is issued by Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil). Both religious and civil ceremonies can be registered at the local registry, where the marriage certificate will be issued. There is no central registry in Portugal. All marriage records are computerised and can be accessed from any local registry office if a replacement marriage certificate is needed.
Portugal Divorce Certificate
The Portugal Divorce Certificate is called Certidão de Divórcio where the issuing authority is Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil).
Portugal Identity Cards
The Portugal Identity Card is called the Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen card). As of 2006 the government has issued the Cartão do Cidadão (Citizen Card). The older Bilhete de identidade which has been compulsory at 10, is still in limited use. All citizens starting at the age of 6 are required to obtain an identity card, but are not required to carry them. According to other sources it is required to carry them.
Is Portugal a member of the Hague Service Convention?
Portugal is a signatory to the Hague Service Convention (Convention of 15 November 1965). Portugal does not object to service under Articles 10(a), 10(b), and 10(c) within its territory.
